Remote working in Southsea: The Brewers Tap

If you like craft beer then this is the place for remote working! The third in my series of blogs about the best places to remote work in Southsea sees me visting one of my favourite pubs in Portsmouth.

The Brewers Tap – A micropub serving local craft beer and a warm welcome

Based in Milton, I’ve been visiting The Brewer’s Tap since it first opened in 2019 and was the first place we visited when lockdown was finally lifted! It’s run by folks behind the Southsea Brewing Co (who brew at Southsea Castle), and this is their tap room – serving up their own beers as well as guest beers, ale, lagers and other forms of beverage such as spirits, wines, soft drinks, and hot drinks.

The venue itself is small and cosy; there’s limited seating downstairs but you can pitch up at the bar and always expect a friendly chat with the staff. Or if you head upstairs there’s enough seating for around 30 people. It’s also doubles as a function room which you can hire for a small fee.

What’s it like for remote working?

Both upstairs and downstairs there’s plenty of plugs available to power your laptop, and they have a guest Wifi portal for you to use, which has always worked perfectly whenever I’ve used it.

Their opening hours are more limited than other pubs/cafes for remote working, opening at 5pm Tues-Thurs, but they’re open from 12pm on a Friday so it’s a great place to end your working week!

Food & Drink

As well as a great selection of beers, wines and spirits, they also have soft drinks, teas and coffees available. They also have a fridge stocked full of interesting beers, ciders and 0% alcohol beers too.

They only have bar snacks in terms of food (their peanut butter pretzel pillows are amazing!) but they’re always more than happy for you to bring your own food, get something delivered, or across the road you have Amigos (Mexican takeout) or Deep Blue (fish & chips) as well as a Co-op a minutes walk away.

Cheese, beer & a community atmosphere

The reason I love this place so much is the staff. They always say hello and ask how you are, and they make the effort to get to know the regulars. Because it’s a small venue, people often sit at the bar and talk to each other so it’s a great place to just go and see some friendly faces.

It’s dog & kid friendly – there’s colouring kits, lego and board games for the kiddies and they have snacks for the dogs. One of my favourite things is that on a Sunday have have a community cheese board. It’s free to enjoy and people often bring some cheese to add to the board. It’s in aid of Helping Hands Portsmouth, a great charity.
